A PLACE TO BE

The earliest residents of Kodaikanal were the Palaiyar tribal people. They have been mentioned in Tamil Sangam literature from the early Common era along with references to Kodaikanal and the Palani Hills. In 1845, American Christian missionaries and British bureaucrats established modern Kodaikanal as a refuge from the extreme heat and diseases of the plains. Over time, some elite Indians recognized the charm of this hill station and started to relocate here. However, tourism in Kodaikanal has been affected by industrial pollution issues, including the closure of a mercury factory owned by Hindustan Unilever, a subsidiary of Unilever's Indian branch. Despite the evidence of widespread mercury pollution, no proper clean-up operation has been carried out thus far.
